Dirty Words

“Wash your mouth out young Australia, you’ve never had it so good!”

Combining the raw energy of rock, the intimacy of cabaret and a touch of circus art, eight diverse, young artists, led by celebrated cabaret-comedienne Tara Dowler of ‘controversial’ (Herald Sun) feminist musical-comedy duo Pink Flappy Bits, shared stories, shake off expectations and exposed the merging of the personal and the political in their everyday lives. Interwoven with scintillating original music, Dirty Words explored how we find our voices in an increasingly divisive world; the conflicts that shape us and the communities we build that give us strength. Working on this politically-charged rock cabaret gave me new insight into the world of costume design for devised theatre. It was an exhilarating experience and pushed my limits and understandings of conventional costume design under a tight budget, lightning-fast quick changes and even unconventional materials.
