Back to the First Year

“Charge your portal guns, grab a sonic screwdriver and check your flux capacitor!”

The 2018 instalment of Monash Uni Student Theatre’s yearly orientation festival show brought the audience to the Monash University for Interdimensional Beings. Rick, Morty and Summer found themselves trapped at this timey-wimey, alien-filled institution when a vital part of Rick’s Portal gun is stolen by none other than Doctor Who’s fast-talking arch-villain, Missy. Did they get it back before she destroys the whole University? Rick enlisted the help of The Doctor, Doc Brown & Marty, and even a few daleks to travel through Space and Time and dismantle this dastardly plot. Tackling a massive ensemble of over 20 students, drawing references from an array of pop-culture scifi classics, with your fair share of quick changes and showy musical theatre displays, this show was one heck of a creative challenge. Working with my co-designer Paris Balla we brought to life this array of zany characters in the best way we knew how with endearing paper mache constructions and the best thrift store finds we could get our hands on.
